چکیده

1. INTRODUCTION The term 'laboratory phonology' was invented more than a decade ago as the name of an interdisciplinary conference series, and all three of us have co-organized laboratory phonology conferences. Since then, the term has come into use not only for the conference series itself, but for the research activities exemplified by work presented there. In this paper, we give our own perspective on how research in laboratory phonology has shaped our understanding of phonological theory and of the relationship of phonological theory to empirical data. Research activities within laboratory phonology involve the cooperation of people who may disagree about phonological theory, but who share a concern for strengthening the scientific foundations of phonology through improved methodology, explicit modeling, and cumulation of results. These goals, we would argue, all reflect the belief that phonology is one of the natural sciences, and that all of language, including language-specific characteristics and sociolinguistic variation, is part of the natural world. In what follows, we explore the ramifications of this position for the relationship of data and methods to phonological theory; for the denotations of entities in that theory; and for our understanding of Universal Grammar and linguistic competence.

Papers in Laboratory Phonology h Between the Grammar and Physics of Speech

Papers in Laboratory Phonology I, edited by John Kingston and Mary E. Beckman, contains 27 revised versions of papers and commentaries presented at the First Conference in Laboratory Phonology, held in June 1987. The editors lead off with an excellent introduction, including discussion of the motivation for the conference, explanation of its multi-disciplinary nature, and summarizations of the ...

Poverty of the Stimulus Arguments in Phonology

Recent discussions of Chomsky's poverty of the stimulus argument have focused on the empirical side of the argument to the exclusion of its conceptual and philosophical foundations in the general problem of induction (Hume, Goodman, etc.). Moreover, it has been claimed that there are no poverty of the stimulus arguments in phonology. Against these claims this article offers an example of a phon...

Beyond Laboratory Phonology The Phonetics of Speech Communication

This paper critically examines the practices of laboratory phonology, regarding two issues that have received extensive analysis in a framework of 'phonology-going-into-the-lab': neutralization of voicing and f0 alignment. A plea is made for a new paradigm of 'phonologycoming-out-of-the-lab', built on function, time, and the listener as fundamental pillars of speech communication.

Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations on Cohesionless Soils: A Random Forest Based Approach

Determining the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) is vital for design of shallow foundations. Recently, soft computing methods (i.e. artificial neural networks and support vector machines) have been used for this purpose. In this paper, Random Forest (RF) is utilized as a tree-based ensemble classifier for predicting the UBC of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils. The inputs of model are wi...
